canvas, usually pops up its news windows below application windows...
but is there any way to get these windows to popup over an application
window? I like to use up all my real estate, so I always have to move a

Not all modules work with the shelf.
If you have a module enabled but it does not appear in the "Configure
contents" dialog of the shelf config then it does not provide a shelf
client.
