Thanks David - I'm sure you're right about that. I've often built and run
older versions of Firefox and font display issues are not a problem I've run
into, but that doesn't mean I didn't run into problems. Apparently this time
they are.

If you're building a Firefox version that old on a distribution that
new, you're missing out on the work that's been done to keep Firefox
working well on newer Linux distributions, so it's not surprising to
see this sort of problem. I don't think you should expect this to
