This is embarrassing, as I have failed in the scientific method. Now the
headphones are working, and it properly returns 0x8000.
I had one fan (the front fan), not plugged in, as I needed a fan
extension cable for the 3 port slot. Having received one today, I
plugged it in. At the same time, I
`fuser /dev/input/event15` showed a process called mouseemu was holding
on to the device preventing it from working propperly.
Killing that process allows the pad to work correctly it seems though
I'm unsure what caused mouseemu to run in the first place.

There is a letter T in the Greek layout. Also, "terminal" in Greek
translates to "τερματικό", both words start with a letter T. So, there
is no excuse for the Ctrl-Alt-T Unity shortcut not working in Greek
