I had a similar problem, and found a workaround. All I did was
completely remove the three folders in ~/.thumbnails: fail, large and
normal. Nautilus then re-reads the metadata and assigns new icons to all
the files on the computer. I hope this helps.

Public bug reported:
All of libreoffice's menu items are greyed out after opening + closing
any dialog. This is a regression that affects both -calc and -writer (I
have not tried other LO programs)
To reproduce:
1) Launch a LibreOffice such as Libreoffice-calc using the dash
2) Open the File menu
The workaround in post #5 solved the problem for me with Thunderbird
15.0 on Ubuntu 10.04
