Google searching has turned up dozens of possible options, all of which seem

If you're willing to pay thousands of dollars, why don't you find a n existing
FOSS program that's as close as possible to what you need, and pay someone -
rent-a-coder, if all else fails - to make the program do wha

How can I find out the *reason* why a package is kept back?
This is all on a default Etch system - nothing peculiar about it, no unstable
or backported or third party repos used, no special pinnings setup.

Does anyone know of a brand/model of eSATA card (PCI-Express, or at least PCI)
that works with Etch?
I'm having trouble finding documentation since almost everything focuses on
internal SATA and RAID. I don't need RAID - just an eSATA connector for
external drives.

Has anyone tried this with Debian?
Anyone know if it's possible, or have any other information about it?

I would not try to sell myself as an uber-geek to work for another

FYI I already know about http://www.debian.org/consultants/#US - I am hoping

Yes, it really is necessary for the user to be able to use dpkg, in my
