do i need to install newer version of xfree86?

I install XFree86 4.2.0 after a fresh installation. I tried install the
3.3.6 then upgrade to 4.2.0 and not install 3.3.6 then fresh install
4.2.0.They both have the same result. when the installer run "ldconfig" Two
error happen:
Updating the fonts.dir file in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/font

If ooconvert requires open office, then you may as well have X
installed to meet all the requirements. If you have to install X ,
then you may as well use OOo.
