Maybe there's a better way to do this? I'm trying to get my system
working right (Debian3.0 w/k7 kernel) There are some packages and
modules that don't work i.e alsa or sound, the screensaver module can't
be loaded,and others. So I ran /usr/sbin/base-confi

When I try to mount my cdrom, either from a terminal
or graphically I get; mount fs type iso9660 not
supported by kernal. The cdrom is listed in /etc/fstab.

/dev/ttyS4 is the correct location of my pci modem. It is not a winmodem.
It is recognized by Mandrake & and, when I had it om my system, SuSE.
Is there something I need to edit to get debian to accept this modem

Although I am able to use the modem in Mandrake & SuSE I can't get
Debian 3.0 to see the modem. It (the modem ) is located at /dev/ttyS4. I
used ppp config to set up and the info is in there correctly. KPPP
doesn't work and when I use pon at a terminal window I get a message
that says 'unrecognize
S4 I tried to copy and rename another similar
file but that doesn't work. Any suggestions??

BUT I screwed up and selected the wrong mouse type. Now I can
login to a great looking desktop but I can't use it! :(

Hi I am very grateful for the community here and I appreciate the help I
received. I will be trying to get my internet connection going when I
reboot into debian. Which brings me to my issue of the moment :(
I really have tried so many things to be able to boot from the grub SuSE
installs (version
pon highstream.net the modem dials up (as it does with kppp
and wvdial) then it just sits there. No messages. when I type poff the
terminal message is no pppd running and none stopped.

than the bf2.4 the DNS problem returned..or that's what I think I'm
seeing-basically a conection that doesn't work. So I ran plog, I got an
exit status 1; I put exit 0 in the 6 scripts in /etc/ppp/ip-up.d

Hi, I did not compile the kernel. as I said the bf2.4 kernel was working
. I have an athlon cpu and thought I was running with the k7 kernel
because that's what I selected during installation. I had been booting
with a floppy though so when i got grub working correctly I began using
the k7 kern

I changed some permissions but it didn't fix the problem. I did notice
that pon highstream.net doesn't produce anything-no modem dial. kppp
does get the modem to dial. The following output is too long and I
didn't know what might be relevent.

manually removed /var/cache/diald and it works!! my shell knowledge is
