I am having problems with a floppy drive. Basicly it won't write
properly on any floppy disk that hasn't been formatted in that drive.
Preformatted floppies screw up. The problem is, that often after a
failed attempt to read or write from the drive, the only way to be able
to use the floppy

Maybe. The error you got, a segmentation fault, means that you tried
to access an illegal memory address. It could be that you wrote beyond
the limits of an array, or made an error in memory allocation.

I just had a peek at the linux distribution HOWTO at
http://sunsite.unc.edu/mdw/HOWTO/Distribution-HOWTO.html. The debian
entry is about debian 1.3 and last updated 13 March 1997. Wouldn't it
