The short of it: hotplug appears not to work after I
exit runlevel 1 (let's say by typing Ctrl-D after invoking
"init 1"). None of the USB devices I plug in are
recognized.
I have to issue an "/etc/init.d/hotplug restart" to
get hotplug back into working order.

Hi!
It may be time for a new scanner.
For years I have used a Visioneer OneTouch 7100 usb flatbed scanner on
various x86 computers running various versions of Debian and

Currently:

Hi.
Easy question, maybe hard to answer . . .
Is someone has an existing conventional Unstable setup (nothing exotic in
hardware or software), what if any special actions should be taken before,
during, or after the impending release of the new Stable?
(inb4:
1 - RTFM
2 - RTF release notes)

Hi David.
Yes, I made the labels for the partitions during the original installation:
/dev/sda1 = / (primary partition)
/dev/sda2 = (extended partition)
/dev/sda5 = swap (logical partition)
/dev/sda6 = /home (logical partition)
So /dev/sda2 has no label, as it is just an extended partition

Hey guys,
Recently there was a thread about aptitude dependency resolution
limitations.
Years ago, I believe I read in the Debian documentation that aptitude was
preferred to apt-get, because it seemed to have better dependency
resolution.
Now, we have apt, as well.
So, all other things being e

And, btw . . .
dpkg?
apt-get?
aptitude?

But why would (or not) that be better than just a home directory within the
root directory?
Wouldn't one less partition be simpler, and therefore (all other things
being equal) better?
Opinions, please.

- stock setup, nothing exotic.
Boot up okay.
Internet connectivity okay (wifi, using Network Manager). No apparent
problems.
But,
