You might want to consider using LTSP. It requires some setup, but
gives you what you want and also routes sound to the thin client.
Additionally, it can be configured to route all traffic over ssh

XDMCP as far as I can tell. In order to use XDMCP, you either need to
downgrade to GDM2, or switch to an alternative display manager such as
