You are not supposed to (and can not) run netscape as root. Thats a
built-in security
measure. The message about this shows up in xconsole.

After upgrading to all the new stuff released in hamm today, I found that

Use the Debian package for Netscape 3.01. I beleive it's still in Incoming
at the moment.
