As far a VJ compression...I think so. In the
/etc/ppp/options file I do not have "-vj" set which, I
believe, disables VJ compression.

connected to ttyS1. I have configured wvdial and I
can call out and establish a ppp connection
successfully. However, when I start some network

Try dialing up after adding 'ATS10=247' to your modem
init string.

I've got a noisy phone line at home causing dialup problems. I can now connect
successfully by extending the dialup time (chat -t 120...thanks John H.).

If my ppp connection drops (due to phone line disconnect) I cannot
anymore
use /dev/ttyS1 (e.g. for reconnecting ppp).
Any attempt to touch the device will hand, like
