In case someone else has the same problem, I found the solution. I started
gstreamer-properties and changed the Video default output from Automatic to X
window system (No xv). This fixed it. When you test the setting from within the
gstreamer-properties app, you should be able to see the difference

I found an interesting side effect of xine: It affects Emacs. 10 seconds
after the launch of xine emacs blinks one time. This effect is repeated
every 20 seconds from now.
I suggest that there is a connection to the screensaver reset of xine
(default value 10 seconds), but I am not able
If I log in via KDM or GDM, xine just shows a scrambled, frozen window
while playing a DVD (sound works).
But if I log in via "startx", xine works fine.
This is true with different users. One user, I deleted the ~/.xine
directory, but that made no difference.
