This seems to happen when both gnome and kde are installed. I've gotten
around this by starting KDE in a nested X server under Gnome, and then
shutting it down. This seems to resolve the problem, although it's
extremely lame as a work-around.

This problem doesn't occur under KDE, since the KDE startup is what
creates all the appropriate linkages to the MCOP directory. Hope this
helps.
