i had the same problem with my radeon 9000.
i looked at the output from "lspci" and changed the BusID in XF86Config-4 to the other
one from lspci.

I tried to add that to the device section in the XFree86 config file, but
then it bails out on not finding a device section for BusID PCI:1:0:0.

I have been struggling for 3 weeks to get my Radeon 9600 working.
I'm running Sarge and kernel 2.6.6
I've installed the drivers from ATI and compiled the kernel module (fglrx)
and it loads correctly (as shown from lsmod).
The logs shows this:
