i'm by no means an expert on things like these, but i successfully managed to install a radeon 9600 with ati's proprietary drivers. if that's what you want, i recommend the instructions on http://xoomer.virgilio.it/flavio.stanchina/debian/fglrx-installer.html . i had to compile the kernel modules and then copy them into the proper modules subdirectory by hand because for some reason the version of the self compiled modules did not quite match the kernel version. i also had to remove any agp, dri and drm modules via modconf. i built my new xf86config-4 with the fglrxconfig tool.
