USB device incongruities

I have two etch systems, one on a desktop, one on a laptop. I have the usb-storage module loaded on both. On the desktop, if I plug my camera (a Pentax Optio M20) in, I get a /dev/sda and a /dev/sda1 device. On the laptop I just see /dev/sda, and consequently can't mount it. Why would that be? If
