I'm having trouble accessing streaming video from a local website. If I
click on a video in iceweasel (up-to-date Lenny), I see that MPlayer-Plugin
is called, and the browser also shows:

Eric, I'm not sure how Kent uses the term "streaming", but just to clarify
my earlier post, I don't use it to mean "live streaming" (streaming of video

If I'm not mistaken, YouTube uses pseudo-streaming rather than "full"

Do I understand that there's no pre-packaged Debian solution for
streaming videos from the Debian/apache box to other clients, similar to
how YouTube streams videos?
I found Icecast, but the official site indicated it's an audio streamer
only, although I saw a reference or two elsewhere about it p

Our local public-access cable station posts most of its shows on the web as
streaming video. I can play these in Iceweasel, which calls the mplayer
plugin. While a show is playing, two identical processes are running, e.g.:
mplayer -wid 0x160192b -vf scale=320:-3 -osdlevel 1 -nojoystick

For some reason I have problems downloading video clips from most
mainstream news providers.
For example on the front page of www.smh.com.au there is a picture at
the moment of a mouse fearlessly staring down a cat. This picture links
to a Windows Media clip.

Mark, just FYI, your mail client isn't sending "References:" headers, so
your replies aren't showing up in the same thread. You may want to switch
clients, or use an NNTP interface, like GMANE. Makes it harder to track
threads and follow up. :)

You might try KMplayer, which is a KDE frontend for MPlayer. If you open
the stream in that, you can easily use full-screen. It's not in Debian,
but you can Google for the repo.
Thanks. Kplayer works well. It's a much better gui than Mplayer, which
complains of "new face failed... perhaps

Hello. I use Debian Sarge, with a high speed adsl connection. In
trying to view the site http://www.cpac.ca/asx/cpac2e.asx, and/or any
"asx" site, using either Mozilla or Firefox, I was unable to with
mozilla-plugin-vlc. I then tried mozilla-mplayer 2.70-1, and I have
been able to view video
I want to correct one point in my origina post, and thank everyone for
their responses.

I wanted to look at a video on a web site that offered it in
RealPlayer, QuickTime, and Windows Media Player format. To my suprise

questions that perhaps people here could answer.

Yes, that's what she does right now. But it's a Windows machine
and therefore needs frequent rebooting :)
Also it's a damn noisy one :(

Hi,
I wonder whether there is a solution for this problem:
My wife would like to whatch some sreaming video channel
from the net on her Windows box but unfortunately the
server is quite busy and it is difficult to connect to it.
The only solution seems to be not to let the connection
