I am still not sure how the information will help my problem. Will the
resources persist across reboots or logging out of X? Since the last x

The problem
I did forget to mention that if I run
xrdb --query
I do see the emacs and rxvt stuff , and if I exit emacs and rxvt and
start them up again, things are fine.
I can't think of anything else, though.

Using 'xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources' would work, too.

Rather than creating your own xsession file try editing
/etc/X11/Xsession.options and
make sure it has the line:
allow-user-resources
Then rename your .Xdefaults to .Xresources and then you can dump your
.xsession. All
should work fine then.

Once upon a time, I heard Goeman Stefan say
Just use .Xresources instead of .Xdefault will do the work. Xsession,

.Xresources, see /etc/X11/Xsession, /etc/xdm, /etc/gdm for the script
