Ah Ha!  This tidbit, along with the comment that you made below about
errors when writing your own .xsession script caused me to go take a
look.  I was under the impression that all that sort of stuff was
handled in the .xinitrc.  Whoops.

I created my .xsession file long ago, before emacspeak was my desktop.
I don't remember there being a problem with rxvt, though.  

So, I added the xrdb line in the .xsession script and all went fine.

Actually, I mv the .xsession in $HOME and restarted X.  Left me in
Gnome, I think.  So, I did the above and all was good in the world.
