It's less flexible from a normal-user standpoint. I haven't used it for
some time,
Hello :)
Just A question: I always used wvdial with no problem, but I noted that
many people (not only in this ml) depreciate it. Why? Security?

I hope you meant to write /etc/ppp/options.

Yes. Debian tends to follow standards and not change upstream
configurations. Debian's /etc/ppp/options is

spewing out different login prompts like mine :-<

i found that /etc/ppp contents fubars wvdial so what i do is empty /etc/ppp
and just
run "wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf" to set it up.
debian is different in most respect specially when it comes to /usr/local so
don't expect that what
you know in redhat will work 100% in debian. well, between distr

The user need not be in the dialout group and pppconfig can put him in the
dip group.

The book is wrong. Use the ttyS* device directly. Don't use the
traditional /dev/modem link (that doesn't account for your problem,
though).

All you have to do to shut Wvdial off correctly is press the interrupt key
(Ctrl + C) in the virtual terminal Wvdial is running in.~

You have to add the users which shall be allowed to connect via ppp to the
dip group (e.g. with: adduser username dip).

CHAP doesn't work. Hmm Do you
Thanks, Jens, I have tried that, but I'm pretty sure my ISP uses PAP. Here
is the ouptput to xconsole from KDE. (I finally figured out how to get it.)
Any clues here?

May 29 08:28:39 probe pppd[270]: rcvd [LCP ConfAck id=0x1

May
try in kppp the CHAP or an script-based
authentication method.

I made a little headway here, I got kppp to go through (as root) but it
died quickly. I'll look for some info on CHAP, I guess, eh?
(I'm embarrassed to say that I had misidentified the serial port, I had it
as /dev/ttys0 . . . oops! But there must be at least another problem!)
