As others have noted, your system is loading the OSS drivers, rather

That's the OSS driver. Are you using hotplug? If so, add "emu10k1" to
/etc/hotplug/blacklist to keep it from being loaded befor

Hey,
Are you trying to use OSS or ALSA drivers? As far as I know the emu10k1
drivers that are included in the kernel will not work for the audigy.
Go here for an explanation of the emu10k1 alsa drivers:

Hello!
Sorry about replying to my own posts, but changing a PCI slot helped...
Anyway I suppose it shouldn't have happened in the first place. Anyone
has a clue why it acutally did? Or if there's a way to change/fix it
without PCI slot swapping?

Mike,
If you're not currently using kernel-source and don't really have a need
for it (the binary kernel satisfies your needs) then don't bother
installing it. This way, you don't need to use alsa-source. You can
just you kernel-2.4.16 (or whatever) and the matching

To a previous question about /dev, I don't usually use devfs on this
machine but to findout what the kernel was seeing:

Now to see what of this is really in /dev:

You *should* use make-kpkg! :) It makes kernel building and module
handling a lot easier. Here's how:
Just download the latest "alsa-source" package by typing "apt-get
install alsa-sourc
I have never used make-kpkg kernel tools. How would I use this to set up the
alsa stuff needed?

The ALSA emu10k1 driver is finally superior to the kernel OSS sound
drivers for sblive. No more hisses and pops, and it's super-easy to
install with make-kpkg kernel tools.

Hi,
The rule of thumb is:
-Older driver (post kernel 2.4.8), newer tools: ok
-Newer driver, older tools: not ok
-Really old driver ( driver version 0.7 or earlier - before 2.4.8 and
any 2.2.x): not ok, use "dm" tool instead
(http://opensource.creative.com/dist.html).
If you find this isn't true,

How linked are the tools version to the driver revision? IE: if i keep
with an 'old' cvs snapshot of the driver, will the tools stop working on
an upgrade?

Anthony,
In /etc/modules.conf
alias sound emu10k1
should do the trick.

make sure you have the kernel-source and kernel-header packages and when
you do a

Do you have these files in your kernel - header
bought a SBLive Friday, I used ALSA 0.5.8b, working fine (Except synth_midi).
I took the sourcepackage.
If you want to use compile, try to install the kernel-headers first.
