1.7-1.8 Afterstep has a builtin theme support. You can use that engine, or do it by hand, just untar the tarball, and put files into appropriate directories (manually). Thanks to all those who tried to help me. Afterstep was running in 16bpp, not 8. If I modified the .steprc file I could make the AFstep.xpm icon appear elsewhere on the wharf bar. The fix was to install xproc_1.12.2_i386.deb from the /debian/updates directory. This made xload work again and fixed
