You can run netscape with the option -install so that it will use it's own
colormap for better resolution.  The downside is that when your mouse is
resting on netscape aftersteps colors will shift, but once you move it to
another application or onto the background  afterstep will appear
normal ( I don't know a good term for it ).  

It allows you to get the colormaps, however if you are flipping between
netscape and other apps, your eyes can go buggy.
