Apropos 486 and firewall: what requirements are there for a firewall /
masq. gateway to serve a LAN of approx. 20 - 50 clients?
I mean, I have seen a 486 25sx w/z a cable modem serve up to 5
Without knowing how much memory your machine has, I would say you certainly
need more than the standard amount supplied in a 486. Mine had 64 Mb in it,
but had 32 at one stage which was okay. More is definitely better when it
come to memory.
Don't throw your 486 away when you eventually get
Try IceWM or WindowMaker. I used to use Windowmaker on a 486/75.

Atila,
I believe you are correct re: Netscape being the time/mem culprit. I
have a 486DX66 w/24Mb RAM Debian test box and use fvwm2 (a.k.a. fvwm
now) quite nicely. I installed Netscape6 and, yes, it worked but like
molasses in January.
I opted for removing Netscape completely and using a very nic

AllĂ´,
It is a shame that olvwm has not evolved to be more competitive on the wm's
list. I have set up a 486DX2-66, with 16MB RAM and low mem Trident
VLB video card, on top of which I run olvwm. Works

From, the help I've got, it seems that the problem is not with the
window manager itself (since there are people who are using X with various

other than those already mentioned, there is icewm.
its advantage is IMHO that it is fast but still i

WindowMaker runs quite decently with the same machine as you, Corey, but w/
20 MB of short (in cm) RAM slots and w/ an ISA video card.
Atila, try to find somewhere in the /usr/X11, usr/doc

I used to run KDE on a 486 Dx4/100 with 12 meg of ram ! But that was a bit
extreme, there ar
Windowmaker runs fine on my 486DX2-66 with 12Mb RAM. :)

I've tried most of them and on my machine the ones that use the least are
fvwm95,
blackbox and olvwm. I find fv
