Hi Alex,
Try:
apt-get install php4-imap
When PHP is compiled by giving extensions the 'shared' keyword, those
extensions get compiled as separate modules, each of which gets its own
Debian package.
Most of the other popular PHP extensions are available, too. :)

just been not upgrading my testing install. I figured there would be

Check the debian-devel-announce archives for this month, specifically
"Warning: glibc 2.3.1 entering testing soon".

Why? Then they'd actually learn something, or at least not be able to
blame their own stupidity on the software.
Can't have either one... that

When you're running anything later than stable, you should read

I have put libc6 on hold. The rest of the update will work and php4
will not be removed.

Yes, it was announced in some Debian MLs.

A friend of mine directed me to this page:
http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.openssl.php
There is a line that say:
To use PHP's OpenSSL support you must also compile PHP
--with-openssl[=DIR].
Maybe the problem is that php4 is not compiled for ssl:
On debian (woody) from the file
/usr/share/doc
pache SSL capable (which I have done plenty of times) to get
PHP Openssl calls to work.
Thanks a lot for your input and thoughts Massimiliano, very much appreciated !
