So, my question to Cecil; have you tried the vesa driver instead of the
nv driver? Any change?
Yes, I did try the vesa driver and startx fails with the same error

Sorry if I missed it but I've skimmed this thread and saw no mention

Now we're heading straight for a bug (strange, on an 'old' system like
woody).
Fresh install from 3.0r1, basic, just X. No ftp, no updates; everything
from CDROM. Mouse driver and uhci (USB) activated.
startx crashes just like last week on me.
apt-get install x-window-system-core comes ok (nothing
As add on: I was starting to doubt myself.
So I took the same, original 3.0r1 and threw it into another, old
machine (AMD400, PS/2-mouse).
Everything okay, X, mouse, you name it. Piece of cake.
Now I will install from scratch on that other machine, delete all work
so far, everything documented and
Dear all,
nope, tried all, no framebuffer, no luck. Tried another -f upgrade,
tried the apt-get install x-window-system-core; you name it.
With the latest upgrade, it seems to detect the card, but the mouse now
is the problem:

(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device

Try turning off the framebuffer. That is a typical workaround.
