I guess that you have errors in your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. Look
for a file /home/<your user name>/.xsession-errors It should contain
errors messages from X. Wild guess(because it happened to me today):
If you just accepted the default suggestions when you were configuring
X and also did not reboot, your mouse is probably not working. This causes
X to abort, because X without a pointing device is pretty useless. But
this is just a wild guess.  Read the error messages to get a better idea
of what is wrong.
