Since so many people are harping on them, I got a
Compaq Presario 7478 with an extra 64MB (tot 128)
and a Voodoo3 for < 1100USD.
AMD K-6 II 500
30 Gig HD
CD-RW
DVD-R
floppy
2 ISA, 4 PCI, 1 AGP, 2 USB
decent keyboard
Debian noticed both CD-RW and DVD-R right away.
Red Hat only noticed one of them.

I had Red Hat installed on my Presario as a dual boot system. It had its own
hard drive, and worked somewhat, but eventually it flashed the BIOS and the
whole motherboard had to be replaced.
I was told (tersely) by Compaq Support that Presarios are NOT GOOD with Linux.
But, I WANT LINUX. Name
