I recommend that you at try the 8139too driver.

echo 8139too >> /etc/modules

The odd thing is that if I unload rtl8139 and then load 8139too then wget the file it
transfers at the full 9.4 - 10 mb/s.

Modem is internal 3com USR Sportster 56k ISA jumpered to com3 IRQ 4
Only hardware thats in the system is the RTL8139, Geforce Card, Modem, sound
is the onboard sound. I have used RTL8139's from when the 2.4 kernel started
on a heap of machines and have never seen anything like this before. The

about 6 months ago. The maximum network speed I could get to his machine was 15 k/s.

I have installed Debian 2.0 (hamm) on my computer
in addition to Windows95. The problem is that altho the
modem works fine on the Windows side, it doesn't work at all
(or I haven't configured it properly) on Debian/Linux. Having

Replaces 'OK' with 'OK-AT-OK' . This tells chat to expect 'OK',

That sounds like a modem problem. Try connecting to the modem with minicom
and sending it ATZ.

Hi everybody,
Ever since upgrading to the 2.2.x Kernel, I have had strange things
happening with my modem. It is a NewComm 33.6Kbps ISA PnP Fax/Modem (now
that's a mouth full).
I have isapnp set up correctly to initialize the modem, and I know it
works as the modem still dials out and connects.

run at that speed. Also go into pppconfig and lower th

I can tell I'm connected by using plog. The last line (when I'm finally

Ok, that tells us that the problem originates in the floppies.

Worser and worser.

Could be. If so, I'm wrong about pcmcia. This begins to sound like a bug
in boot-floppies, but I would have though someone else
to the self-healing?

Get rid of whatever is changing it back. Something that is running at boot
is changing it back. This is a serious bug.
I recall that you said that this is a laptop. Are you using any pcmcia
stuff?
