does it work as root? if so, you need to add your user to the audio
group
hope that helps,
cheers,

I was trying to fix this months ago and then discovered nethack and
kind of got distracted. Anyway, now I'm back.
I have no sound.
When I boot knoppix it uses via82cxxx_audio and works. I have that
module installed so I added the line to my "via82cxxx_audio" to my
/etc/modules. Still no sound.

I finally installed kernel 2.4.19 and alsa-source,
alsa modules seem to be loaded ok,
but I can get no sound,
I use alsaplayer and it keeps printing
null plugin active...no sound output
can anyone give me a hint on how to make this work?
thanks in advance

Hi!
Hmm, found a neat programm which could tell you if the card is on the pci
bus: lspci or so from the package pciutils. Please try that once. And... you
could try the following module parameter: esstype=0 (and nothing more).
Another question: Have you compiled the kernel yourself, and which syst

Oh, sorry, I changed the subject line by mistake although the thread was the
same... so this is a double-posting.

Hello again!
Sorry that I didn't write for so long but I had the flu. So, I've
finally looked up what this chip is and I've seen... it's an ISA card
chip. So, you probably have to set the resources for this card before
you can load the sb module. Maybe, you can do this by switching the

I am trying to esd sound to work on my computer but I just can't do it.
I can get genertic beeps on the command line but that is it.
In windows it says I have a ES1869 audiodrive.
I have read the soundblaster module is supposed to be for that but
installation failed.
I have tried echo asdfdaf
I'm very favorably impressed with Debian 2.2r3.
However, I havn't been able to get the built-in sound working on my
Dell Dimension XPS R400. This is supposed to be a Crystal
Semiconductor CS4236. The cs4232 module comments indicate that they
support this chip, but seem to expect it on an ISA pnp
