Install crafty and start up xboard from xterm with the command line
xboard -fcp crafty
the problem with gnuchess not working with xboard goes back
to the change from version 4.77 to version 5.0
(when the opening book also disappeared).
One fix is that /usr/games/gnuchessx should be a
You have to pass some parameters to gnuchess when you start xboard (i can't
remember the parameters).
Try check the manpage of gnuchess ('man gnuchess'). I had the same problem
before and I read the solution from the mapage.

In my Slackware distribution, by default, when xboard was started, it
would allow you to play against the computer. How do I do this with
Debian? I'm assuming that I'm missing something really simple.
Thanks.

I've tried to install gnuchess + xboard from both stable and unstable. In
both cases the board appears in X but when I start the game I first get an
error message that there is no global file in /etc/gnuchess. I tried
making a file called "global"; I then got another message about a
system to test it, but I don't
think there is any reason why this package wouldn't install correctly on a
bo system.
BTW, the filename of the latest version is
/dists/unstable/contrib/binary-i386/web/netscape4_4.0-7.deb

In bo (Opt), I see it as netscape-beta, and gnuchess.
I think you need the German (or other foriegn) site for gpg. Ha
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
hi
i can't find the debian installer for the above netscape...
is it in hamm?? am i stuck in netscape 3 till then?
then this happened:
Unpacking gnuchess-book (from .../games/gnuchess-book_1.0.deb) ...
Unpacking gnuchess (from .../games/gnuchess_4.0
I've just upgraded GNUChess. It tells me "Noting the disappearance
of gnuchess-book. It has been completely replaced." (or words to
that effect)
What exactly does this mean and should I re-install gnuchess-book?
