I am trying to set up alsaplayer-gtk as the default for opening mps's in
Nautilus. It comes up when an mp3 is clicked but it doesn't play the
file. I have to click on the play button. What am I missing ?

Solved! Sorry to spent away your time... the error is because alsconf
created ~/.asoundrc and ~/.asoundrc.asoundconf with something that
crashed alsaplayer and related stuff. I removed them and sound started
working again... Even skype was not working and now it is working

False. They do occur. They are also accompanied with a message such

When I attempt to stream MP3/Ogg Vorbis data, or play it locally,
with xmms or alsaplayer, it will randomly enter phases of repeated
skips. These happen in bursts, thus it will play fine for a while
and then suddenly skip 30 times over
Using debian testing, kernel-2.6.6, this is really not a huge problem because
I can play audio CDs with other applications, but I wonder why when I use
alsaplayer I get this error:
CDDA: read TOC ioctl failed
Googling has got me the question but no answer that I can see.

If I start alsaplayer from the gnome menu, it doesn't emit any sound
nor it gives any error message either. The buttons move as if, but no
sound comes from the speakers.
If I start alsaplayer from the gnome terminal, the same X application
pops up, sound comes out, all is ok.

Does anybody know how to stop alsaplayer from doing the following things:
* playlist looping
* starting to play the previous playlist at alsaplayer startup
* setting the volume to 100% at alsaplayer startup
