sound on my system worked fine until a recent upgrade to the latest kde
packages. I'm running debian unstable. Sound is through a via686a chip,
with sound support built into the kernel. No alsa or oss on system.

I downloaded the source for kernel 2.4.7
I configured and installed the kernel in the same manner I have done
countless times on multiple prior kernel versions. Everything went fine.
I create the kernel image using the "make bzImage" command.
When I tried to restart the computer I got the mess
