Thanks for the help, you pointed me in the right direction, funny thing is
that the Hostname lookup field in the cupsd.conf file was set to on when it
should default to off --> that took a while!!

Excuse my ignorance but couldn't the problem (at least in some part) lie in
the fact that everything is coded/compiled for a 386? Surely code could at
least run more efficiently with code that is compiled to use things like MMX,
MMX2 and 3Dnow technology? I find it insane that I'm gonna have to

Hi all
Now that I've got printing in KDE to work I need to get Openoffice and
network(Samba) printing to work. Oo seems to need a commandline input and
this is what I'm starting with and also where my confusion begins.
A few questions,
Which package is lp part of?
Should I use lp or lpr? I seem

Hi
Have you gotten K3B to work for regular users? I get the error
Unable to find cdrecord executable
K3b uses cdrecord to actually write cds. Without

Hi
I use
/dev/hda7 /data vfatrw,users,auto,gid=106,umask=003 0
0
with any other users in the 106 group. You still have a bit of control but its
not such a pain in the ass.

hmmm pity, I was hoping that I'd missed another easy fix that is hard to find
that would put me out of my missery *yawn* I'll try again tomorrow..
Thanks for the input.

Hi all
I've been setting up the important things for a while but now I'm getting to

need to do is to get printing to work. I've been battling to get cups working
for a while now and I came across something on the net tha
I seem to get one of these everyday these days.
I think its an epidemic!!

I've taken another route that doesn't work for everything, for things like kde
and gnome I 've done a search on apt-get.org or just on the applicable site
and found stable sources. After adding these sources to the sources list you
get the most recent copies of almost everything without the whol

Hi, I'm trying to make my own kernel useing make-kpkg to solve my earlier
problems with DMA etc. When I start the first processor family gets answered
for me as i386. I run an AMD K7 chip and I would like to compile accordingly.
How do I change this default and what possible implications ,if any

How would you recomend that I get support? apt-get *new-kernel*, or apt-get
source? Are there maybe modules that I should be looking for?

My output for "lspci -v | more" is
00:11.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. Bus Master IDE (rev 06)
dparm -d1 /dev/hdc
/dev/hdc:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
using_dma= 0 (off)
Has anybody got any ideas?
