er twm (this is provided by xbase, so you needn'e load a new package), fvwm, fvwm2, 9wm, or gwm. I use fvwm, but am meaning to migrate to fvwm2. It may be that my previous stall problems were actually exaccerbated by using a higher-speed serial line (i.e., I must have been offering relatively more interrupts to the CPU than someone with a slower modem). I don't see the conflict between libc5-dev and libc5, just a conflict between libc5-dev and the version 4 libraries (libc and libc-dev), (as well as a conflict between libc5-dev and pthreads-dev).
