An issue in libasound2 and libglibmm-2.4-1v5. You want to revert:
libasound2, libasound2-data to 1.1.6-1
libasound2-plugins to 1.1.6-1+b1
libglibmm-2.4-1v5 to 2.56.0-2
And the sound is back.

Strange I don't have this issue. I have removed xserver-xorg-input-
synaptics and the only dependency removed was xserver-xorg-input-all.
I'm on GNU/Debian unstable.

Reverting to gdm3/stable (3.14) fixes the issue. So it sounds like a
gmd3 3.18 bug.
