You might want to consider walking into the store with a Knoppix boot CD/DVD and booting the laptop with Knoppix. If it works you know the hardware will be supported by Linux. It may or may not be supported by Debian though since Knoppix uses Redhat based hardware detection support . On 3/13/06,

Recently I installed XFree86 on my Intel box in the hopes of getting the NVIDIA drivers up and running. I changed the config files for apt to point to the unstable distro and did the upgrade but it didn't seem to work. Currently I can't even get X up and running and am thinking about reinstalling
