I've been using version 0.17 for at least 3 months now and I can unmount
with no worries. See if you can locate version 0.17.

this but didn't the sound card configuration settings used to be included
at the end of a .config file?

I've got one more suggestion.
I did briefly try a program called "news peruser" an X based offline
news fetcher/reader. It looked pretty good at the time but that was prior
to my current install and I haven't installed it again. I grabbed it in
.rpm format and used alien to install it.

structure of the /etc directory and printed it for future reference. I
did this more as a comparison to my previous RH system just out of
curiosity.
Today I went exploring my system to find that I had no rc0.d, rc1.d,

differences in the C libraries are and i could find no mention of
libc5, libc6 or glibc.
I know that Debian is in the process of moving to libc6 and that RH
has already (somewhat shakily) moved to glibc.

I had that problem during one of my installs. Can't remember what I did to
cause it but I used dpkg to install the correct server for my card, ran
the xf86config routine and all was well.
