Try /dev/ttyS0. That's what I had to use. (Actually I use /dev/mouse but
made that a link to /dev/ttyS0.)

/etc/issue and /etc/debian_version tell me that I am using 3.0
(woody).

In late July I used several floppies ( rescue, root, drivers) to get
started
with Debian and downloaded the rest on-line. I've learned quite a bit
in the two months since then but have a long way to go yet, not having
a background in unix/linux before this.
