/etc/issue and /etc/debian_version tell me that I am using 3.0
(woody).
What is it that distinguishes one version from another?
Regarding the ablility to switch to one of many desktop choices: I was
editing .xinitrc and .xsession in my home directory (slow and
inconvenient)
Based on the responses, I now need to explore "menu". On my system,
"menu" had no "man" page but does have an explanation in "info". Also
the x-window-manager command.
