Ok, this makes sense. I know the /boot dir is in /dev/sda1. I'll try the
default now.

Great suggestion! Couldn't have said it better myself! Not even close!
One thing I would like to add is that when Debian has a major upgrade, it
should ALWAYS keep your config files. I know that
Ok, I lied!
As part of the Lenny to Squeeze upgrade, I guess
there's a whole new grub boot process!
It tells you that when your system settles down,
you should run "upgrade-from-grub-legacy" ... ok,
I just did that now and I am STUCK!
I guess I have to pick out what device that

Ok, one more quick Debian user question ... last one, I promise!
After my upgrade to Squeeze I have a lot of packages that were "rc": removed,
but configs remain. A lot of these appear to be obsolete packages. In any
event, I won't be using them. Is it ok/good/smart to "apt get purge" them?

I have a question about using packages.debian.org.
Sometimes I will come across a package that is no longer in stable and will
want to find out more about it. Like right now I found out I have
"texlive-context" in my systems history. The package is removed, but the
configs remain. I'm pretty su
Hey all,
I have been trying to solve this mystery for a while. I have Defoma on my
system and just upgraded to sqeeze. I found old messages in the Defoma package
logs that said it was a dead project. That was YEARS ago. But it's in Squeeze
and there's no mention of it being dead. I use fontconf

I use the 'iceweasel' package for my main browser. But I was thinking about how
Firefox itself (at mozilla.com) is much newer. I read a blog comment that
someone started running the newest binary directly from Firefox instead of the
iceweasel package. Is this even possible?? If so I'd like to tr

Someone probably already replied to this, but there's a little more info on the
"LMTypewriter10" mystery. As Norbert Preining points out in the NEWS.Debian.gz
file and elsewhere, the name change in lmodern came upstream ... from, it looks
like, the MAKERS of the font itself! So I guess that's no

And wait, there's more ... the first issue of just USING this font again
is now solved, by either changing all the software that mentions
LMTypewriter10 to instead look at LMMono10 (until someone decides to
rename it again, gru
Ok guys, I think we're getting somewhere!
At least closer to solving the mystery of these missing fonts ...
pretty darn close, I think, but not quite there. I'll try to explain. (I'm also
being forced to split this mail into three messages, thanks to the bad
filtering at Yahoo. Sorry about this

No no, misunderstood -- that was not how I upgraded. That was what I did AFTER
the upgrade.
What I first did was just like what you said:

I am almost-almost there with this problem. It's come down to some Phpmyadmin
funkiness and that's about all.
First of all, Remco was absolutely right: I had to try reinstalling
mysql-server, and that updated it for me to a new version. THEN, when I tried
to log in with my mysql user account on

Roger, I think that must be the problem then. fc-list gives me a little more
than 1300 font names, but this one (LMTypewriter10) is no longer on that list.
So I guess my ques

That's exactly my question! Because X WAS aware of it until this blasted
upgrade ... now it has no clue about these fonts. W

Ok, I just tried making a /var/run/mysqld directory as described here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-551741.html
And this is not the solution. Running "/etc/init.d/mysql start" still does
nothing. I also notice that nothing's logging in /var/log/mysql and the

One additional piece of data here.
I just checked and the /var/run/mysql directory is missing!
Will creating this directory fix the problem?

are completely broken. Even the PC speaker stopped beeping, but I was able t

No! Just GNU Emacs 23. Emacs has had support for using all X fonts, including
truetype fonts, for a while now. (Do a google on "pretty emacs" to see some
screenshots.)

Yes and no. I mean, I would have DEFINITELY wanted to go Nouveau had I known
what it was. I was using Lenny for a long time with the proprietary Nvidia
driver. Not happy AT ALL that it was proprietary, but the NV driv

Hi guys,
I came in ready to tackle my ongoing problems with this Lenny to Squeeze

I run MySQL locally and access the databases all the time with phpmyadmin in a
browser. Today I tried to log in and got this error:

I am really stuck today everybody! Another problem with my lenny to squeeze

This happens every time I run a program that opens a new window. Sometimes it
makes the program abort. I have my w

The fonts that are 'lost' after going from lenny to squeeze are all TrueType,
as far as I can tell. I also just noticed that "xfs" was not ins

Seems like a good idea. I checked it. Now in /etc/fonts/local.conf there is no
mention of bitmapped fonts, but instead there's a symlink 70-no-bitmaps.conf in

I just took the plunge and upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze. Now I'm having some
