In a thread on backups, somebody mentioned backing up homebrew.
So that means homebrew exists for linux, and that some active participants
here use it.
And indeed, there is homebrew for linux:

Presumably, the use is for packages that either don't exist on d

I would like to install debian 10 on it, but the installer really wants
access to a cd drive, and one just isn't available.
However, the linux mint 16.04 system does have grub2 on it.
So it is possible for me to boot from an iso image s

I can tell it is installed because when i run the command

the system responds with "libmypaint-1.3-0 is already the newest version".

install, and it seems to be.
The desktop manager looks different: i think it is gnome, but i'd like it
to be xfce.

There's a piece of software, lazpaint, that i would like to install on my
debian system.
As far as i can tell, it is not listed at packages.debian.org.
It does have a *.deb file however.
The project dates from 2011, so i think it's pretty well established.

I would like to install the info node for elisp (in emacs).
I went to packages.debian.org to search for elisp in stretch. There are

Does the elisp info node come in a package, or is it a M

I'm half-way looking for some shell wrappers for common trig functions like
sin, cos, exp, log, and others.
I'm aware of bc, but it seems cumbersome.
I would like to just type 'sin 1' and get the sine (of 1 radian), or type
'log 2' and get the natural or maybe common log of 2. (Probably any such

I'm trying to build some software, and one of the long list of items
to install prior to configuring is 'alsa-lib'.
I tried
'sudo apt-get install alsa-lib'
but got the message
'E: Unable to locate package alsa-lib'
So i looked around on the internet, and saw a page for an alsa-lib
package

BeOS had (and i imagine Haiku has) a file system that allows all kinds
of attributes to be attached to a file.
I understand it to be something like having a two-column key-value
table attached to every file.
I understand that file system was ported to linux with the name BeFS

I have some DFTs that i wish to inspect. (Apparently DFT is a common
acronym, but here i mean Discrete Fourier Transform. And properly
speaking it doesn't make sense to inspect a transform, but only to
inspect transformed data, but i'm speaking colloquially.)
DFTs are a common artifact in digita

Does debian have guidelines or rules for post-installation scripts?
I had trouble installing a package, and i would sort of like to file a
bug describing the behavior. But i'd only want to do this if there
were rules, and these rules were definite enough to make it very clear
something in the pac

sudo apt-get install .. libfftw3-doc
(I installed several other libfftw3 packages at the same time.)
I can see a pair of lines in the output that say

I plan to produce some time series data and i would like it to be in a
form that makes it easy or effortless for pre-existing programs to
plot or even process further.
The data would consist of a few hundred to a few thousand time points,
and for each time point there would be a half-dozen to a do

installed it on a fresh, empty partition.

There's an Applications menu in the upper left which has lots and lots
of applications listed under multiple submenus.
There's a program that i have on my system whose name i cannot find in
the Applications menu.
However, that might just be because

That is, the second copy should not share history, cookies, any kind
