As Unix-like-system afficionados, we can't afford to get uppity about
what decade our software was designed

True, but sometimes wrecked filesyste

It's better to use -q. That way grep can terminate right away when it
finds the first match.

Hi, all...
I'm another "normal" Debian user (non-newbie/non-guru ) and I have
some questions on iptables and using modules under 2.4.x.
I've been running an older Debian system for a while and started out
with ipfwadm on a 2.0.x kernel. Sometime later I upgraded and a wrapper
for ipchains was
Hi, all...
I've done 3 fresh Debian 2.1 installs from the GNU/Debian 2.1
CD (2.2.12 kernel) I have over the last few weeks and they all
went fine, until my 4th machine, which freezes up during
hardware detection of the install kernel.
So far, I've tried disabling all the on-board stuff, includ
Thanks guys... :)

I've got all the specifics I'll need. Woo!
I'm mostly using console right now, but I'll be
setting up 2 machines using X, too, so it's cool
that you guys hit both fronts. :)

Hi...
Is it possible to setup the display in linux to shut off
after some time of inactivity, just like (gasp) Windows?
I've been converting my machines to linux-only and I'd
like to have the monitor auto-shutoff after some time.
Does such a thing exist for linux? I've seen packages
for managing
e being downloaded now, and once things are installed
and configured, I'll post any problem I ran into with this setup.
Since I have no data on this new machine, yet, I'm willing to do a
little potentially risky stuff like this... :)

Thanks again, Sebastiaan for the pointer in the right direction. :)

Yes, from checking out the man page, that looks like it
might do exactly what I want.
Many thanks :)

Hi, guys...
I've been running debian for years, but only on a couple
machines until recently. Now, I'm setting up a new machine
to replace one of my other machines and wanted to clone the
choices for packages to have installed and then have apt-get
get everything downloaded and installed for me
Hi, all...
Getting good feedback from you all; THANKS! I've got
another question on my issue. Brief recap: I've got
a 60Gig drive that doesn't look to be the right size
to cfdisk, but I understand that newer versions of the
kernel (2.2.14, for example) calculate the size of
large drives over 3
Hi...
As far as I know, "large" files (greater than 2Gig) are
not supported in linux. Has this changed, or is anyone
aware of any work on this?
Thanks for the info...

Thanks, Erdmut...
This 34Gig limit might be my problem. As everything,
but cfdisk seems to read a usable geometry of some kind.
cfdisk sees the total size as something like 27 billion
bytes, so is reducing my total number of cylinders.
Anyone know where I can get a bootable installation CD
wit
Hi, all...
I'm trying to install a new system from a Debian 2.1 CD I
have (VA Linux Debian 2.1 Install from the store shelf that
has the 2.2.12 kernel on it) and I'm just running into some
really weird stuff.
Well, after partitioning (about 59Gig for / and 2 x 128MB
for swap partitions) and the
Hi, all...
It was a while since I asked for some help with my
SB Live under Debian. I was having trouble with the
pre-compiled modules (kernel version mis-match).
So, some kind person pointed me to source for the emu10k1
driver (how was I supposed to know this had anything to do
with SBLive? n

Hi, all...
I'm trying to install an SBLive into my linux machine and
I'm having trouble getting the sblive module (v0.2) provided
by Creative Labs for kernel 2.2.5 to install under 2.2.12.
I enabled MODULE VERSION support for my kernel and recompiled
everything, which I assumed would allow this
Hi, all...
Anyone running a 3dfx Voodoo3 3000 on Debian?
Just curious if it works well or not.

Hi, all...
I've been scrounging around for info on some of the troubles
I've run into with my "upgrade" from Debian 2.1 to 2.2 in
August (see my email with similar subject as this one for
details).
ok, so I'm been looking into the trouble I have with Samba,
and I found in the Samba message arch

Hi, all...
I just joined the list, in hopes of finding a solution
to a problem I had some time back with upgrading my
Debian system via APT/dselect.
I had installed 2.1 from CD, and then used dselect to
install nearly all of the packages I was using. Within
a week after 2.2 was released (week of
