Apparently I was hacked (via nfsd) so I plan to reinstall the whole system.
Is it safe to leave the rest as is or do I have to do something more than just
clean the disk with `rm'?
I mean all the boot records, master boot records, LILO's and so on and so forth.

When I view them with mc using F3 they appear to have lost their format. All
end-of-lines are removed and the text is `justified' to approx. 80 columns.

I've just fallen into serious trouble:
can not umount my CD-ROM - it is reported as beeing used.
I'm sure it is not, what may have happened is that I was examining it's
contents with `mc' which died suddenly.

1. dpkg --status telnetd
if not installed => install
(in my case this was the problem - apparently by default it is not installed)

Most probably you use X as yourself and install WP as root.
You must enable root do display at your DISPLAY e.g.:
