I'm installing Debian 3 using the 'compact' floppy set. I'm hung up
at the "Install Base System" phase. After several unsuccessful
attempts to install the base system from the network (I kept getting
download errors and mysterious "dbootstrap has exited with an error"
messages), I'm now trying to
This is driving me nuts... every now and then, for one reason or
another, some program(s) will gobble up all available memory (128MB RAM,

I'm using Python on a Debian machine, and I've installed both the
python-1.5 and the python2 packages. I prefer to use python2.
Unfortunately, the way the Debian packages are arranged, many of the
additional libraries available for python (such as PyGTK) are as yet

need to add to my X config files?

quick question: is there a simple way to tell apt-get to install a
package *plus* all of it's recommended and suggested packages? For
example, KDevelop can utilize a whole slew of optional packages if they
are installed, but by default apt-get only fetches the necessary
dependencies, not the recom

grief when I try to install or upggrade it. It's a different list of
packages each time, but the same type of issues with apt-get, dselect,

So, what am I doing wrong?

This is a message I /should/ have sent before I even tried
to install Debian. Oh well, better late than never.
Here's the deal: I want Debian on my machine. Mandrake is
in many ways wonderful; it has the best install in the
world (in my experience); it has loads of bundled software;
and it does
