Hi!
As mentioned in another thread yesterday, i have setup getmail to
retrieve mails from my gmail id. In my setup, getmail delivers the
mail to procmail, which in turn filters them into different mailboxes,
including a "possible-spam" mailbox depending on certain criteria. Now
all my d-u mails a

Hi list!
I am using debian lenny and icewm as my window manager on X.
I use gnu screen within my xterm and sometimes within my console. I am
having a strange problem with gnu screen for the past few days. Within
xterm, gnu screen opens just fine. But if i open screen within
console, i get a huge li

Hi all,
i have a debian etch system, which is a nfs client machine. Since yesterday, i
am not able to login using my nfs username and passwd on tty1, tty2, tty3 etc.
It gives the error: "checkpassword: wrong password." It accepts root passwd on
these. However i can login to xdm (runlevel:5, tty7) u
Hi all,
I had a debian etch running on my system for the past few months. Today the
system was working fine, i was out for a while for tea, when i came back, it had
hanged and when i force-rebooted it after everything else failed,
x-window-system does not start at all. I had put runlevel 5, but it
btw, 'lspci | grep audio' does not give me any output...could that be an
issue?

Hi all,
when i tried 'dmesg' as suggested by Raffaele Morelli, i found a line
towards the end:
..
hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC880, trying auto-probe from BIOS...
.
thanks Jonathan, but have altready done that. And tried both as root and
user, doesn't work. Also i have added 'user' to group 'audio'. I suspect
it is something very trivial, but i am clueless as to what else needs to
be done. I cannot get sound on vlc or xmms either though i can play the
video.
Hi all,
i just cannot get sound working on my machine. I have installed alsa and
run alsaconf. But if i try 'speaker-test' or 'cat /dev/urandom >
/dev/audio', i just don't get any sound. I have attached several outputs
below so that somebody else might be able to figure out what is wrong.

How stupid of me? it isn't...i had done
apt-get install x-window-system
and i thought xdm gets installed with that.
I installed it and now it is running fine. Thanks to all of you.

Hi all,
I have debian etch installed with icewm window manager. I want xdm sevices
to start at boot so that i get the gui login. I changed the runlevel in
/etc/inittab from 2 to 5. But still xdm services do not start at boot. So
I checked my /etc/rc5.d/ directory and found that there is no file S99

Hi all,
I am new to linux and newer to debian. I did a very stupid thing today. I
needed to run the crystallography software ccp4, when i tried doing it, it
said the 'libc.so.6' does not exist. So i transferred the file from a
fedora core 3 machine to the debian machine. ccp4 did run for a while. B
Hi all,
I am new to linux and debian and recently installed debian-3.1 using DVD
from a friend. But it seems a lot of libraries or dependencies are
missing. I cannot open any molecular viewing packages like pymol and had
problem installing other packages. Whenever I try to install these
packages, I
