I am confused as to what power management technology I should be using. When I
installed debian etch on this powerpc Apple PowerBook, apm was used as default.
Things are working great here and I have no complaints. However, I understand
there is also ACPI, which is newer.

"oldstable" as an option for the distribution to install. So you
have to choose "stable" (or even "testing") and then break to a shell
to do manual surgery on the sources.list file if you want to install

ATI website. Which packages did you purge prior to reinstalling? All

IIRC, you can stick a call to gnome-session in your ~/.vnc/startup to
get a GNOME desktop in
