xchat and perl scripts (crash)

Okay I don't know if this has been discussed before, and if it has I was wondering if someone could tell me where I can go to find a searchable arvhive of this list. Xchat has been crashing on me whenever I load a perl script, I've tried diffent scripts and they all seem to crash the client even a

kdm, blackbox, and .xinitrc

Hmm.. I tried upgrading some drivers (orinoco-0.8.tar.gz) by copying them into the linux drivers tree (/usr/src/linux/drivers/net/wireless/...) but the new modules didn't get installed when I ran 'dpkg -i ../kernel_image...' What, if anything, did I do wrong?
