I don't have any experience with DSL, but I can tell you about the AT&T @home
setup. Most of the networking stuff should apply to either, but you
should *insist* on an external adapter with a ethernet connector to your box.

In order to get realplayer to install the new version, I edited
/var/lib/dpkg/info/realplayer.postinst (also realplayer.prerm) to
change references from /usr/lib/RealPlayer7 to /usr/lib/RealPlayer8. I
~/.also edited mailcap in the same way so that netscape would use it.

reconfigure X, your XF86Config is broken, i suggest using XF86Setup but
you can probably use anXious or xf86config as well ..
may be helpful to rename or delete your existing /etc/X11/XF86Config

I find it much easier to mess with the initscript with the
update-rc.d script.
To remove for example xdm from the initscript you enter:
'update-rc.d xdm remove'
If do do that, then xdm wont start from init any more.
